Our trip to Germany didn't get off to the best start (we missed out plane to Berlin and had to buy new tickets but fortunately flew out a few hours later) but it was one of our best holidays yet.
We arrived in Berlin just in time to visit the Christmas market near our hotel and head to East Berlin for some dinner at a great pub. Our hotel was incredible, it was the home of Danish silent film actress Asta Nielsen, very beautiful- I felt like Miss Marple!
Dan's German was fantastic and he was very happy to receive compliments wherever we went, he got us out of a few confusing situations! We both loved Berlin, a very cool city.
On Friday we flew to Cologne over snow covered fields and forests. It was so cold, there was a Christmas market on every corner and we were constantly stopping for hot food and drink. We ate sooo well, bratwurst, crepes, mulled wine, potato pancakes, potato dumplings, spaetzle (yum!) and of course, schnitzel! Not to mention all the chocolate and gingerbread we ate.
Next was Tübingen, a traditional university town. It was like a
Christmas card, snow on roofs and forest areas and we walked up to Schloß Hohentübingen where we not only saw an amazing view of the city but also a red squirrel and a woodpecker!
The last part of our trip took us to Munich where we were met by my friend Janet who showed us around and gave us a night time tour of the city. Janet took us to a medieval Christmas market where we saw falcons in their little hoods and big fire balls as we drank our spiced rum which was served in huge clay goblets and set on fire! We needed it to keep us warm! Janet took us to a very old Bavarian beer hall for another enormous dinner before leaving us to explore the city which meant more Christmas markets and German cooking!
In total we went to 13 different Christmas markets and added a few more treasures to our ever growing collection of decorations.
