The Big Trip!

For our summer trip, Angie and I went for a driving holiday through Wales and the North. It was a big, big trip! We started by going west to Wales and stayed the night in a farm just outside Cardiff after spending the afternoon in the city.

The next morning we started the drive up to Snowdonia (National park around Snowdon mountain). The drive actually reminded us both of Scotland, because of the mountains all along the way. We stayed that night in a town called Dongellau, where the buildings in town were all stone. After that night, we made our way further north up to Caernarfon for the night - site of Caernarfon Castle, where the Prince of Wales was crowned.

We sadly said goodbye to Wales as we made our way to Liverpool for an impromptu stopover and a visit to the Tate Liverpool for the Gustav Klimt exhibition. Of course, being the jetsetters that we are, we had seen a bit of Klimt's work in Austria, but, well, you know...

From there, we made our way to Haworth for a visit to the Bronte Museum for the English Teacher of the family. Such a lovely town, although we were bailed up by a local woman who just wouldn't let us go! Everyone was very nice though, apart from the local woman who was quite "opinionated". Our B&B was amazing, the food was great and we met a couple who are immigrating from Manchester to Brisbane. We were sad to leave.

For the last two days we headed into the Lakes District and stayed in Hawkshead, just down the road from where Beatrix Potter lived.

The first day we drove to Hadrian's Wall and back (only an hour and a half each way) in time to have a look around her house, which is called Hilltop. We didn't get inside though, all the tickets were sold out. The afternoon was mostly fine so we whiled it away in a tea shop in town having lovely cakes, we ate a lot of cakes on this trip.

On the last day, we had a large drive to London, but it was punctuated with a stopover at Lyme Hall, the house used as Pemberley in the BBC production of Pride and Prejudice. Angie was all aflutter, but it was a really nice way to finish the trip.

All in all, a really good way to see lots of the country, and there are plenty of places we'd love to go again.
