This weekend the three of us took a long weekend and caught the Eurostar under the channel for a short stay in Paris. The weather was great when we arrived so we just wandered around and enjoyed the summer. We hit the supermarket, tiny cheese shops and bakeries to buy our dinner and then ate it in the park.
We had all been before so we decided to take the train out of town and visit the palace of Versailles. The crowds were HUGE and it was pouring rain! It fortunately cleared up in the afternoon but we still spent over an hour lined up to get in in heavy rain.
Despite the space it still felt very crowed and claustrophobic. The grounds are enormous, 800 hectares and that does not include the hunting grounds which have now been cut from the palace. There are actually little trains to get you from place to place, to get around on foot takes a VERY long time!
The palace is amazing, beautiful and intimidating, I can understand why Marie Antoinette built a smaller place to have to herself. The Queen's Hamlet, the village Marie Antoinette built for her children was my favourite part. It was amazing and still works as a farm.We spent our last day trawling the tiny shops and markets stalls, Dan was very patient!
